HOW DO INSULATION TYPES INFLUENCE THE PRICE OF THE METAL SANDWICH PANEL?
It is essential to understand how insulation types influence the price of the metal sandwich panel. The majority of structural insulated panels have either of these three types of insulation: PUR, PIR, or Rock Wool.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TYPES OF INSULATION?
PUR insulated panel is cheaper, while PIR insulated panel has better fire behavior than PUR. It is worth mentioning that PIR and PUR have the same thermal insulation value and easiness of installation.
A Rock Wool sandwich panel offers superior fire behavior and even fire resistance. But it has a lower thermal insulating power and higher weight per m2. Therefore it’s heavier to lift and more challenging to manipulate than PUR or PIR sandwich panel.
Generally, the market offers a PUR sandwich panel in most cases, while PIR insulated panels and Rock Wool insulated panels are less common.
BETTER FIRE BEHAVIOR: SAFETY FIRST!
A PUR sandwich panel is cheaper than PIR and Rock Wool insulated panels, but for safety reasons, it’s better to consider having a type of insulation that offers better fire behavior.
This point stands stronger if we consider this important factor: choosing a better fire-rated insulated sandwich panel may grant your building a higher future value, especially if we consider that insurance cost tends to be cheaper.
When you decide on any of the 3 types of insulation of a sandwich panel, check that the type is well specified along with the density.
A lower density means a lower price for the insulated sandwich panel, but that may not be what you want to get.
A PUR or PIR sandwich panel that has a low density may have quality problems, e.g. “holes” in the insulation.
Generally, the density of a quality PUR or PIR insulated panel should be between 38 and 42kg/m3. Lower densities should not be taken into consideration.
A Rock Wool sandwich panel has different densities, but not all of them will carry a Fire Resistance Certificate.
For example, if a Rock wool insulated panel has a density of 75 kg/m3, it may not have a valid Fire Resistance Certificate.
In this case, you have to be sure that the insulated metal panel that you are purchasing is exactly the one that you need.
