HOW TO CLEAN COLD ROOM PANELS?

Cold-rooms are places where you can store and process food and drinks. Consequently, a cold-room tends to get dirty and contaminated by bacteria very quickly. In most cases, cold-rooms are made of metal insulated panels. In this blog post, we will give a guide on how to clean cold room panels and avoid damaging the surface of the insulated metal panel.

COATING OF REFRIGERATION PANELS

The metal sheet of these insulated panels may feature:

• a Polyester coating;
• a PVDF coating;
• a Plastisol coating;
• a PET coating;
• the metal sheet can be made of Stainless Steel (INOX).

Each of these coatings has a different chemical composition and different suggested use. The most standard one is the Polyester coating.

When doing the maintenance of a cold-room, it’s essential to clean and disinfect the surface of the insulated sandwich panel, without damaging it.

Unfortunately, in most cases, the personnel on duty are not appropriately informed, so they may damage the coating, which then may cause oxidation of the insulated panel.

Therefore, I’ve decided to write in this article a small guideline that may prevent you from committing a mistake and damage the insulated sandwich panel and ultimately, your cold room.

TOP 8 TIPS TO FOLLOW WHILE CLEANING THE SURFACE OF A METAL INSULATED PANEL:

1. Always clean the surfaces from top to bottom.
2. Rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water;
3. Add to the warm water the correct amount of cleaner, DO NOT excess the suggested quantity and dilute it;
4. The pH of the cleaner should be between 4 and 9;
5. High-pressure cleaning should not be done too closely, or perpendicularly, to the surface of the metal insulated panel. When using a power washer, respect the following guidelines: 5.1. Maximum 50 bars at 30cm from the surface of the panel;  5.2. Respect the application temperatures, which generally are between 30 and 50° C maximum;  5.3. At the joints, the high-pressure cleaner should be pointed downwards to avoid forcing water into the joints.
6. Do not leave the washing solution in contact with the metal sandwich panel surface for more than 5 minutes;
7. Remove any remaining trace of dirt using a non-abrasive cleaner;
8. Rinse with clean water.

Now that the “should” part is clear, let’s focus on the “shouldn’t” one:

1. Do not use cleaning products containing chlorine, or related products;
2. Never mix different cleaning products;
3. If you use a concentration of the cleaner higher than recommended, this could cause damage to the surface of the metal insulated panel, which may cause oxidation and damage your cold room;
4. Excessive cleaning may damage the finishing.
5. Using a steam cleaner can damage the coating because of the high temperature.

Remember, water is a scarce resource, so use it wisely and don’t waste it!
